Important gender differences in psychosomatic and school-related complaints in relation to adolescent weight status

Abstract Underweight or overweight in adolescence is linked to several adverse health outcomes. Less evidence exists about the association between weight status and school-related psychosocial characteristics high income countries. We sought investigate relationship psychosomatic complaints with a focus on gender differences. The study cohort of 18,462 adolescents (12–19 years; 51% girls) conducted Sweden. associations were estimated by binary logistic regression adjusted for potential confounders. After correction multiple testing, being underweight overweight/obese was adversely associated significant differences boys girls. Specifically, had higher odds have than normal-weight boys, while no such observed among Overweight/obese (vs. normal-weight) complain headache, pain back/hips, feeling low. girls more likely low, anxious/worried having difficulty falling asleep (P ≤ 0.01).
